In order to understand the salvific role that the Blessed Virgin Mother has in God’s plan of salvation, we will first examine the communion of saints. In Acts 9:13, we read, “How much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem?" Those who believe in Jesus and live his gospel are called 'saints,' which translates to 'he holy ones.' These holy ones are of the living, here on earth at that time. In (Act 9:15), we read, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry out my name before the Gentiles, …" Throughout the book of Acts we read, that Jesus appointed his disciples, and he uses them as instruments to spread the Good News. This observation leads many to beg the question, "Why did God choose this type of plan, could he not simply wave his hand and put everything back in order?" The answer to this is, he sure could have; but, because God is love, He chose to give the saints a role in His plan of salvation.
Those who are baptized, all have a responsibility and duty to be an instrument to the spirit. As His tool, we participate in others' salvation by bring them to Christ. Remember that all who are baptized into his death, now live in His life, His body the Church (1 Corinthians 12:12). With our sufferings, united to Christ’s sufferings (Colossians 1:24), those who are sanctified, become cohorts in the work of salvation; but remember, it is always Christ who saves (1 Corinthians 6:11). In 1 Corinthians 6:1, Paul tells his disciples not to go to the civil courts but to go to the saints (the living on earth) in order to settle disputes. Paul felt it unjust for pagans to judge the saints. He reminds them that the saints (the living in heaven) will judge the world (here on earth) and the angles (there in heaven). This passage says the saints will be our judge, in (Matthew 19:28) we read the 12 Apostles will judge the 12 tribes of Israel. Again, in John 5:22 we see that all judgement is given to Jesus. Ultimately it is Jesus’ judgement, but we being members of his body (His Church) will judge with Him, in Him and through Him (1 Corinthians 12:27).
What I am pointing out here is that the Body of Christ, consists of those on earth, the souls in purification (purgatory)and those in heaven. “What is the Church if not the assembly of all the saints," of which the Mother of Jesus is the faultless imitator of Christ her son, for she was the first Christian (Catholic Catechism). Those who have died and who are in heaven, are alive in Christ for all eternity. This makes them more alive than we are here on earth. In Revelation 22:8, we read about John falling to the ground to worship the angel, which the angel told him, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brethren the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God." The Church consist of heaven and earth, the body of Christ cannot be separated, since it is one body with many members, including the angels (1 Corinthians 12:12).
I cannot imagine a better Christian, saint or imitator of Christ, than His mother. What a tremendous example she is of taking up the cross and following Jesus. As Jesus's mother, but also as a perfect disciple (Luke 11:27-28), Mary suffered immensely during Christ’s passion and death (Luke 2:34-35). She certainly carried her cross, one of extreme sorrow, and bore it all the way to the foot of her son’s cross. Galatians 6:2, tells us to, “Bare one another’s burdens," this is certainly what Mary did with her son’s Passion and death. Her merit was totally due to God, for she was full of God’s grace as stated by the angel Gabriel in Luke 1:26-28. She was mot full of the life of God, just for the purpose of giving birth to His son, Mary was consecrated for the purpose of being the instrument which God gives life to all the living (Revelation 12:17).
Jesus is the new Adam (1 Corinthians 15:47-49), Mary is the new Eve, mother of all the living for all eternity. Imagine Mary standing at the foot of her son Jesus, as he hang there on a cross, blood streaming from his body, his face disfigured by the beatings. All of his followers are gone except for John, Mary his mother, Mary his aunt, and Mary Magdalene. Jesus in his torment, says to John and His mother, to embrace each other as mother and child (John 19:26-27). In doing so, He calls her 'women,' in order to make the connection of Mary is the women prophesied in (Geneses 3:15) and (Revelation 12:17). Jesus does this, moments before He gives up his Spirit, with His final breath Jesus institutionalizes the role of Mary, as Mother of His Church.

Two Unique Conjugal Partnerships
Revelations 19: 7-10
"Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.” Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."'
A man marries his beloved woman so that a deeper relationship, a consummated relationship, can be experienced. The consummation of a man and woman (sex) is the ultimate experience and binding act of love. In a similar way, Jesus Christ has married us, His Church, so that he can take away our sin and consummate his divine relationship with us through the Holy Eucharist.
Do not get me wrong here. I am not suggesting that Jesus has sex with Catholics via the consecrated host, No - what a perverted thought! What I am suggesting is much deeper - even more intimate than sexual intercourse. Jesus loves us so deeply, that upon His act of marriage (death on the cross) he handed down a means of coming together with him through a physical interaction - actually consuming his body and blood! Do you not see it? Look at the words themselves: consume / consummate. It is clear that through ingesting his true body and blood we are experiencing the most intimate nature of his presence (physically and spiritually).
In modern America, weddings are a big production. Yea, sure, some people have smaller weddings or just simply elope; however, the vast majority of people are spending thousands upon thousands of dollars on their wedding day. Oddly enough, this modern societal tradition is deeply rooted in an ancient tradition of The Church. Notice in the scripture passage above, the mention of a marriage supper - similar to what we now refer to as a wedding reception. What an amazing parallel. For thousands of years, weddings of all sorts are celebrated with a follow-up feast; Jesus' wedding is no different. Every Sunday we are called to experience His wedding and participate in the feast of his holy body and blood, so that we may have eternal life. We have all received a formal invitation to this wedding feast - no need for a "Save The Date."

There are generally two types of fasting. First, the total fast, which is the denial of food or drink prior to the receiving of a sacrament, for example, Holy Communion. The second type of fast is of abstinence, a more general and personal fast to help one become more disciplined and self-controlled.
How did fasting become such an important means of preparing for the Eucharist and learning virtue? Christian fasting is revealed in interdependence (depend on each other) between two events in the Bible: the 'breaking of the fast' by Adam and Eve; and the 'keeping of the fast' by Christ during the beginning of his ministry. Adam and Eve, rejected a life dependent on God alone for one that was dependent rather on "bread alone."
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms of fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onward. Members of the Eastern Catholic Churches are to observe the particular law of their own sui iuris Church.
A Reflection on Lenten Fasting:
If possible, the fast of Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, as well as to prepare ourselves to share more fully in his Resurrection. Christ is the new Adam. At the beginning of his ministry in the Gospel of Matthew, we read, "When He had fasted 40 days and 40 nights, He became hungry." Hunger is that state in which we realize our dependence on something else. It is during this hunger that we all face the ultimate question, "On what does my life depend?"
Satan tempted both Adam and Christ, saying, "Eat, for your hunger is proof that you depend entirely on food that your life is in food. " Adam believed, ate and died. Christ said, "Man does NOT live by bread alone" (Mt. 4:4; Lk. 4:4). This liberates us from total dependence on food, on matter, on the world. Thus, for the Christian, fasting is the only means by which man recovers his / her true spiritual fortitude. In order for fasting to be effective, then, the spirit must be a part of it. Christian fasting is not concerned with losing weight. It is a matter of prayer and spirit, and because of that, true fasting may lead to temptation, weakness, doubt and irritation. In other words, it will be a real fight between good and evil. At times, we may find ourselves loosing this fights; however, the very discovery of the Christian life as "fight" and "effort" is an essential aspect of fasting.
Christian tradition can name at least seven reasons for fasting:
1. From the beginning, God commanded some fasting, because Adam and Eve broke the 'fast.'
2. For Christians, fasting is ultimately about fasting from sin.
3. Fasting reveals our dependence on God and not on the resources of this world.
4. Fasting is an ancient way of preparing for the Eucharist—the truest of foods.
5. Fasting is preparation for baptism (and all the sacraments)—for the reception of grace.
6. Fasting is a means of saving resources to give to the poor.
7. Fasting is a means of self-discipline, chastity, and the restraining of the appetites.
Q. Why do we say that there are forty days of Lent? When you count all the days from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, there are 46.
A. It might be more accurate to say that there is the "forty day fast within Lent." Historically, Lent has varied from a week to three weeks to the present configuration of 46 days. The forty day fast, however, has been more stable. The Sundays of Lent are certainly part of the Time of Lent, but they are not prescribed days of fast and abstinence.
Q. So does that mean that when we give something up for Lent, such as candy, we can have it on Sundays?
A. Apart from the prescribed days of fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and the days of abstinence every Friday of Lent, Catholics have traditionally chosen additional penitential practices for the whole Time of Lent. These practices are disciplinary in nature and often more effective if they are continuous, i.e., kept on Sundays as well. That being said, such practices are not regulated by the Church, but by individual conscience.
Q. I've noticed that restaurants and grocery stores advertise specials on expensive types of fish and seafood on Fridays during Lent. Some of my Catholic friends take advantage of these deals, but somehow I don't feel right treating myself to the lobster special on Fridays during Lent.
A. While fish, lobster and other shellfish are not considered meat and can be consumed on days of abstinence, indulging in the lavish buffet at your favorite seafood place sort of misses the point. Abstaining from meat and other indulgences during Lent is a penitential practice. On the Fridays of Lent, we remember the sacrifice of Christ on Good Friday and unite ourselves with that sacrifice through abstinence and prayer.
Q. I understand that Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, but what exactly are the rules for these fasts?
A. Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals.
It is often difficult to trust in Jesus while we are weak and damaged. When people we love and trust brake our hearts we loose trust in them. Over time, with repeated difficulties and misbehavior toward us, this heartbreak begins to strip away our trust toward everyone. This causes us to put up emotional walls, built in an effort to shield ourselves from the rest of the world. These walls become visible in our personalities; we become unapproachable. I wonder how many times I did this to the people that I love. I wonder if it ever affected their trust in me. All of this muck causes us to be doubtful; doubtful even in Jesus Christ.
I believe Jesus understands these circumstances, and if we ask Him, He will forgive us; but, we must also forgive others. We must forgive the wrongs done unto us, in order to reestablish a trusting relationship with them. Trust Jesus, for He can do no wrong. All that we need to do is ask for his forgiveness. Jesus promised his disciples, as long as they were in the world there WOULD BE trouble. This is true for us as well. Our focus should be on seeking Jesus, the perfect one. His eternal love is our eternal hope, which comforts the soul.
